Phoenix (STN) – Putting volunteers to work where they’re needed most has kept one Valley nonprofit connected to hundreds of organizations across the community for more than three decades.
During Season 5 of ‘It Happens at STN,’ viewers got a first-hand look at HandsOn Greater Phoenix and its president and CEO, Todd Byard, whose organization has built a longtime partnership with Arizona Financial Credit Union.
“HandsOn Greater Phoenix is a volunteer management nonprofit. We’ve been in the Valley for 33 years, and our mission is to put volunteers to work where they’re needed most,” Byard said, noting the organization mobilizes close to 10,000 community-based volunteers each year through one- to three-hour episodic volunteer projects.

The organization partners with hundreds of Valley-based nonprofits, community service organizations, and municipalities connect volunteers with local causes.
“If you’re a nonprofit and you’re in need of additional volunteer support and don’t have an avenue to be able to find that support, then that’s where we can really help you,” Byard said, describing a system built to make signing up for community volunteer projects easy and convenient.
The impact, Byard said, often extends beyond the immediate task at hand.
“What I see when I go to volunteer projects with our volunteers is the light switch go off,” he said, describing how participants are exposed to community issues and nonprofit partners they may not have otherwise known about.
That impact is made possible in part by a long relationship with Arizona Financial Credit Union, HandsOn’s longest-running corporate service partner, dating back to the organization’s move to its current space in 2018.
“Our relationship with Arizona Financial Credit Union goes back many years,” Byard said. “Our organization would not be where it is if it weren’t for Arizona Financial Credit Union.”
