From servant leadership to mission alignment, Ryan Garlington breaks down what makes boards successful and how they can fail

Phoenix (STN) – During the November episode of ‘It Happens at STN,’ Ryan Garlington, board co-chair of the Black Chamber of Arizona, joined the show to talk about leadership, mission, and what makes boards truly effective.

Garlington said it starts with purpose. “You have to understand their reason for being on the board. What’s the incentive? Is it accolades? Is their reasoning aligned with the mission of the organization?” When board members connect their personal passions to the organization’s goals, he said, they become more engaged and better equipped to lead.

The opposite is also true. Misalignment and silence can stall progress. “When board members don’t buy into the direction of the organization, it’s important to be transparent from a leadership standpoint,” he said. Garlington credited Black Chamber President and CEO Dr. Velma Trayham for modeling that transparency by sharing information early, setting clear expectations, and inviting honest input.

He also shared his philosophy on personal leadership. “I don’t look at leadership as standing behind a desk. I’m passionate about servant leadership,” he said. “Everyone has a voice. My job is to create an environment where people can perform at their best.”

His message to board leaders was simple and direct. Boards work best when purpose comes before position; when people know why they’re at the table, they’re ready to build something together.

Before leaving the stage, Garlington highlighted the Chamber’s next major event — the 27th Annual Gala, set for Dec. 13, 2025 at the Sheraton Renaissance in Glendale. The theme is Elevated Western, and cowboy hats are encouraged.
