Phoenix (STN) – For University of Phoenix Provost and Chief Academic Officer John Woods, education has always been about creating opportunity.
Featured during the Season 4 finale of ‘It Happens at STN,’ Woods reflected on a journey that began in Hamilton, Ontario, and ultimately led him to a career helping others achieve their educational goals.
As the youngest of three children, Woods grew up in a family without a strong tradition of higher education. College was not viewed as an obvious next step, but that changed after he enrolled and discovered a passion for learning and personal growth.
The experience inspired him to pursue a doctorate focused on higher education administration, adult learning theory, and workforce development. Rather than entering the corporate sector, Woods chose a career in higher education, dedicating himself to helping students access opportunities that can change the trajectory of their lives.
Today, he believes the University of Phoenix plays a unique role in serving adult learners and working professionals.

One of the most meaningful parts of his job comes during commencement ceremonies, where he presents degrees to graduates and witnesses the impact education can have on individuals, families, and future generations.
Woods also emphasized the importance of collaboration. The strongest partnerships, he said, are built when organizations take the time to understand one another’s mission, purpose, and goals before seeking ways to work together.
For Woods, education and collaboration share a common purpose: creating environments where people can grow, succeed, and build a better future.
