BofA’s Russell Goldstein on purpose, philanthropy, and impact

Russell Goldstein opens up about service, clarity, and why connecting people and purpose is the most powerful part of philanthropy

Phoenix (STN) – For Russell Goldstein, purpose didn’t begin in a boardroom. It began at the family dinner table.

Growing up in Staten Island, he watched his parents serve others. His mother was a high school teacher, and his father was in mental health and nonprofit work. “It was never a formal lesson about philanthropy,” he said. “It was just how they lived.”

Today, Goldstein carries those values into his role as an institutional client advisor with Bank of America Private Bank. He works with philanthropists, foundations, and nonprofits to help them invest, give, and create impact with clarity and intention.

“I love the conversation of philanthropy,” he said. “How do we help people move more capital, more time, more resources further and faster to the issues that matter most?”

What drives him isn’t just financial expertise but connection. He sees his role as a bridge, linking donors to the right causes and nonprofits to the right partners. “One of the most powerful things we get to do is connect the dots,” he said. “The sooner we align values and purpose, the sooner impact can happen.”

When asked what he looks for in a partnership, Goldstein kept it simple: clarity and commitment. “Clarity of purpose, clarity of who’s doing what, and accountability,” he said. “These challenges take time. You need endurance and aligned values to keep moving forward.”

He also credits Bank of America’s deep investment in community, through philanthropy, affordable housing, volunteerism, and economic mobility, as a key reason he’s still there after more than two decades.

His call to action for leaders in the room was clear: do more than talk about impact, act on it. “Progress happens through movement, even small steps,” Goldstein said. “Take the next step forward, together.”
