Transportation may be the most overlooked barrier facing Arizona families

Transportation can determine whether someone receives food, healthcare, or support. Elaine is working to bridge that gap

Phoenix (STN) – Food banks exist. Healthcare providers are available. Community organizations offer resources that help people build stability and improve their quality of life. But, for many Phoenix residents, accessing those services depends on something many people take for granted: transportation.

That reality is at the heart of Elaine, a nonprofit that provides free transportation to underserved residents and individuals experiencing homelessness throughout Phoenix.

“Elaine provides safe, reliable, and free transportation to the under-resourced in Phoenix and the unhoused,” said Executive Director Lori Carlson.

The organization helps clients reach healthcare appointments, pharmacies, food pantries, government offices, and other essential services.

According to NourishPHX Executive Director Beth Fiorenza, transportation remains one of the biggest barriers preventing people from accessing available resources.

“The number one barrier for people to access resources is transportation,” Fiorenza said. “They really are a lifeline to the community.”

For many clients, the impact is immediate. William, who relies on Elaine’s services, said transportation can determine whether he can bring food home at all.

“If it wasn’t for Elaine, I couldn’t get the food back to my apartment,” he said. “Food insecurity is a real problem right now.”

Despite operating only four vehicles within a limited service area, Elaine helped nearly 7,000 people last year. Even so, demand continues to outpace capacity.

“Due to our limited resources, we do have to turn away about 50 percent of those in need,” said Director of Operations Keith Astorga.

Support from Mercy Care has helped expand services beyond traditional medical transportation, funding rides for food pickup, dental care, vision services, and other critical needs.

For Elaine, the mission is simple: helping people access the resources they need, one ride at a time.
