SEASON 1: Actionable Advocacy · Making a Difference in the Community

Local credit union debit card helps fund Valley animal rescue group

The stats tell a sobering story: Many nonprofits fail in the first two years.

While established charity organizations must still work to make ends meet, the fight for funding can often prove fatal for newer groups.

That’s why the Arizona Financial Credit Union’s Local Causes program was created. Launched a few years ago, the program helps its customers fund chosen nonprofits with every purchase.

In 2022, nonprofit animal rescue, The Barnhouse Community, received funding from AFCU through the Local Causes program. The rescue works to develop a deeper connection between the community and its environment, and thanks to a boost in funding from AFCU, they can keep doing it.

"I wish there were more organizations like that that really reached down and helped to support the up-and-coming nonprofits."

Animal Experience

The Barnhouse Community is a nonprofit organization that began as a place where the community could gather for a purpose. We quickly realized the human-animal connection was a primary focus and the benefit it had on the community. Our first year was primarily focusing on the feral cat population and also the adoption of cats and [the] shelter environment in general.

Funding Issue

Most rescues fail in the first year or two. It’s primarily because funding is such an issue and the need is greater than all of us combined.

The fact that Arizona Financial has focused on small organizations is more than a simple blessing. It’s one of the things that we need for these kinds of organizations to continue. I wish there were more organizations like that that really reached down and helped to support the up-and-coming nonprofits.

Valued Support

Thank you so much Arizona Financial for giving us the opportunity to continue doing the work that we do for reaching down to us as a smaller organization and noticing that your support is incredibly appreciated and valued. Thank you, really doesn’t seem like enough, but I’m really excited to see what you as an organization continue to do for small nonprofits like us.

"It's humbling to know that just through conversations we had about a debit card program, this is what it's become."

Bank Guarantee

Arizona Financial is committed to our community. We are committed to the possibilities of what our community can build together. [The] biggest thing for us is to support those in need and those small, local nonprofits can really be overlooked.

Our Local Causes Visa debit card program was created to support the communities that we serve through our members’ everyday transactions. It was created to be a simplistic way to give back to your community, just by doing business with us.

Perfect Partnership

[During] this last round of our grant program we are going through applicants and The Barnhouse [Community] had applied. One of the things that stood out to us was the diversity of what they’re doing here in the community. They just seemed like the perfect recipient for what we are trying to accomplish.

Just the Beginning

Being here and walking through the property and seeing Cassidy’s dream, and hearing about our community dream in so many different aspects, it’s inspiring. It’s humbling to know that just through conversations we had about a debit card program, this is what it’s become. This is what it’s going to do. I can’t wait to see what is built here at the property. And beyond that.
