Phoenix (STN) — There are hundreds of millions of debit card transactions every day in the United States, with millions of those occurring right here in Arizona. Thanks to a unique program from Arizona Financial Credit Union, 65,000 members are making a positive impact on the community every time they swipe their debit card.

“Every time that card is used, we take a portion of our income, make a donation, and help smaller nonprofits throughout the state,” said AZFCU President and CEO Amy Hysell.

“Every time you use that card, you’re helping us give back to the local community. It’s just that simple.”

As part of STN’s mission to highlight how our partners in the financial industry are effecting change and addressing systemic issues in the greater Phoenix area, the October episode of “It Happens at STN” featured a look at AZFCU’s unique ‘Local Causes’ debit card program.

The card is available to anyone who, according to Hysell, lives, works, or worships in the state of Arizona. The funds collected through the program are spent on programs and organizations in the area.

“It is very hyper-local focused,” Hysell said. “Our first two recipients were the Million Dollar Teacher Project, as well as Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels, which helps children fighting cancer.

“Every time you use that card, you’re helping us give back to the local community. It’s just that simple.”

Applications for the grants open twice each year and can be found on the AZFCU website.

“I would really encourage those small nonprofits, with less than $2 million in revenue, that really need support to apply for our grant,” Hysell said.
