Strength, not silence: a new season of bold leadership from STN

A massive studio audience and urgent tone set the stage for a season focused on bold solutions

PHOENIX (STN) – With its signature blend of bold storytelling and authentic conversations, ‘It Happens at STN’ kicked off another season of community-focused storytelling by reminding Arizona audiences why the show continues to stand out as a one-of-a-kind media experience.

From the beginning of the first episode, it was clear, this wasn’t just a return to form—it was a recommitment to action; This will be a season of strength, not silence.

That set the stage for ‘Leading in the Moment,’ where Jackson Fonder and Monique Lopez of UMOM challenged nonprofit and corporate leaders alike to “lead anyway.” In a world where political turbulence has paralyzed many organizations, especially nonprofits, their message was clear: the time for waiting is over.

“Clarity is not coming,” Fonder said. “If you’re waiting for someone to tell you what to do, you will be buried.” The two emphasized strategy, collaboration, and human-centered resolve in the face of rapidly shifting public policy.

That theme carried throughout the episode. Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) CEO Nathan Smith reflected on his personal journey into service—and called this “a rally season,” urging leaders to control what they can and move boldly toward impact.

Elsewhere, the audience saw what action looks like with updates on Arizona Financial Credit Union’s Azpire program, which is partnering with nonprofits to bank the unbanked; and Keys to Change’s frontline work getting newly homeless individuals housed in under 72 hours.

But few inspired more joy than Rick Coffey—aka Big Kid Rick—whose dance-fueled fitness movement is helping millions “evolve unapologetically” through joyful movement. His message: show up and embrace accidental solos.

The episode closed with ‘The Wellness Collective’ with Mercy Care and partners reframing food insecurity as a public health issue, not just a social one. Programs like Farm Express and Double Up Food Bucks are investing in community infrastructure that can weather future crises.
