PHOENIX (STN) – Vince Kozar’s journey from intern to president of the Phoenix Mercury is a powerful example of growth, mentorship and the importance of creating opportunities for others. He joined the season finale of ‘It Happens at STN’ to share insights on leadership and empowerment, drawn from his own unconventional path.
Kozar reflected on how he never envisioned himself in his current role and credits his success to leaders who believed in him even before he fully believed in himself. This core experience shaped his leadership style today.
“Sometimes you see things in people before they see it in themselves,” he shared. His commitment to nurturing talent and keeping the ladder down for others resonated deeply with the audience.
Beyond individual mentorship, Kozar discussed the Mercury’s broader impact on the community, especially in supporting and uplifting young women and girls. From launching the first girls-only basketball league in Arizona to fostering leadership qualities in young athletes, the Mercury’s programs are about more than just basketball.
“The fundamental belief that girls who play become women who lead,” Kozar emphasized.
Sports, he argued, are powerful vehicles for community building and social change. He urged everyone to widen their perspective on sports beyond the game itself and see the deeper community impact.
How Vince Kozar’s mentorship fuels community change:
“Our product, our players provide representation and visibility to groups of people who may not see themselves in the four major professional sports,” he added.
Kozar also offered a thoughtful perspective on allyship, challenging men and leaders to be intentional with their language, support, and presence when it comes to empowering women. Whether it’s attending games, supporting young girls in sports, or fostering inclusive environments, his message was clear: show up.
“Our responsibility to our fans, to our athletes, and this community is to uplift,” Kozar concluded.
